ECCO Sko A/S is a Danish shoe manufacturer and retailer founded in 1963 by Karl Toosbuy, in Bredebro, Denmark. The company began with only the production of footwear but has since expanded into leather production, as well as accessories and small leather goods. ECCO opened its first retail store in Denmark in 1982. ECCO’s products are sold in 99 countries from over 2,250 ECCO shops and more than 14,000 sales points. ECCO is family-owned, founded in Denmark in 1963, and employs 21,300 people worldwide.

A review by BRAD KAVA MARCH on March 2010 for CT WATCHDOG about Ecco shoes, warning customer of almost New Expensive Shoes Disintegrate:

There I was at a formal party, wearing a black suit and a beautiful pair of Ecco shoes (lace-up Oxfords which list for $159-$187) when I felt like I had stepped in something. The soles of my shoes suddenly got sticky and when I looked down, big pieces were falling off. Right there at a formal gathering! I have only worn the shoes twice, and my mind started racing. Did I pass through some kind of acid bath on my way here? Did the carpet cleaner somehow get chemicals in my shoe closet? Were they in heat, cold? None of those was the answer. And as the night wore on, I grew more and more frustrated. My shoes were dissolving and leaving black pieces everywhere and I didn’t have a clue why. Let me say this: I’ve been a big fan of Eccos and have owned 20 pairs over the years. I’ve recommended them to my friends. They are expensive, but up until now, have always been worth the money. In fact, I sent three pairs of their hiking boots to Haiti, in the wake of the earthquake, thinking that was something people could really use. So what was this mystery shoe ailment? The minute I got home, I typed this sentence into Google: “My Ecco shoes started disintegrating,” and voila! and Thank the heavens and Al Gore for the Internet. There were hundreds of other complaints by people saying the same thing. Some said their shoes were older and hadn’t been worn; others said they were fairly new. I’m religious about checking reviews before I buy things, but never before noticed the complaints about Eccos. In fact, I recommended them to George Gombossy, our fearless leader here, and he bought two pairs, one of which disintegrated after six years. Mine was a couple of years old, but only worn a couple of times. I don’t get it. This reminds me of Toyota and a major company ignoring big problems. There are complaints on the boards dating back to 2007. I am writing the company and will keep you posted on what it says and does.

UPDATE: March 15: Ecco sent me an email saying the company will send me a shipping package so it can inspect the shoes. From the commenter below, this is a good sign that the company is taking care of the problem. On the plus side, that’s great. Also, all of my other Eccos have held up well. On the negative…can I risk having my shoes fall apart at another important event?

Head Office loves to micromanage and store employees get no freedom at all. The pay is low but you're told to "Be happy that you have a job". Overall, don't waste your time here there are better jobs waiting for you."

"Had absolutely zero training with the manager. None. He would sit in the back on almost all his shifts. He would scan in product but never put it out or up. None of the staff felt that he communicated. He was constantly leaving notes all over. I got to open after 21 closings. Then when I asked if I would be trained on opening, another note. So I had no experience opening. Granted it was easy, not the point. He would schedule himself at 7:30-8 am when the store doesn’t open until 10. I assume it’s so he had less time on the floor. The DM said he needed to not come in any earlier than 9:30. He also would leave early almost every shift. I had several customers say he was not pleasant to deal with. And he would interrupt your conversation with your customer without being asked. I have worked in retail many years and have never worked with a manager like him. I couldn’t deal anymore so I said good riddance."

"I have had a pair of Ecco walking boots which I have used for around 15 years. Unfortunately they have recently started leaking. They have an excellent grip on ice, and due to this, I was hoping to replace them with boots with a similar sole.

I looked online and went into the local Ecco shop. The shop did not have the boots I was interested in buying in stock. I explained I wanted to replace my walking boots with ones with a similar sole due to their excellent grip in ice. My understanding from the staff was that the sole of the Ecco Exostrike W is essentially the same sole and grip as the Ecco Exohike (Michelin sole). The Ecco Exostrike boots are also advertised online as having a “Rugged rubber outsole (which) adds excellent grip and durability in all weather conditions”. I purchased the Ecco Exostike boots by click and collect on 10/12/20.

The Ecco advertising that theEcco Exostrike boots have “excellent grip.... in all weather conditions” is misleading. I cannot walk with confidence on icy pavements and had to resort to walking in the roads in recent minor snowy/icy conditions in a town centre. They are in no way a replacement for the Ecco walking boots I have used for around 15 years – where I could walk on icy surfaces with confidence, knowing I would not slip and fall.

I contacted Ecco on 31/12/20 expressing my disappointment. I was offered a 10% discount on my next purchase. Following some consideration of this offer, I felt that as I have to buy a pair of boots I can use in icy conditions and no longer have confidence in the Ecco online descriptions, this response was unsatisfactory. I replied on 02/01/21, requesting a full refund. I was informed on 06/01/21 that this request was passed to the management team. I have not been contacted with a decision regarding my request for a refund.

"I bought these in the sale, thinking they were the exact same design as a pair I currently own which are extremely comfortable. Unfortunately they weren't, they were narrower and pinched my toes. As I have bunions I really need to have some width in the toe box. So I will be sending them back.
It would be really helpful if Ecco could indicate on their website which of their shoes are a wider fitting as it's not possible to judge from just the photographs.Otherwise it's a waste of Ecco's time as well as the buyer's to be continually ordering shoes and having to send them back."

They are blue and have an elastic cross strap I thought it was velcro!
They are comfortable but a bit loose and I cant tighten them

"The shoes are not that comfortable unfortunately. They feel a bit stiff and rub at the back. Usually there's no wearing in ecco shoes for me as they're usually so comfortable. Hopefully with a bit of wear they become more comfortable."

"Firstly, the service is very good, easy returns, and the label is ready for you, should you need it. As you can guess, I had to return the boots, size 40 which I couldn’t even get my foot into. My other boots are size 40, so the design of these must be for an an extremely slim foot or ankle . I would recommend a larger size for most in this range. I am waiting on my refund."

"Hi, I received my order in 2 weeks.
The ECCO ST1LITE are very comfortable.
However the ECCO UKIUK are definately as comfortable as I expected. I ordered these to replace my old pair and honestly while they look exactly the same - they feel hard under foot ...and the wool lining seems lighter. I recall how immediately comfortable the last pair were, and continued to be for years. I only stopped wearing them a month ago as the upper came away. I hope the comfort underfoot improves with these ...but I suspect they are not made as they used to be? Can you advise? The previous pair were purchased in store in Ireland about 6 years ago."

"Very nice boots but the sizing of the boot caused a bit of a problem. 9 1/2 to 10 is a little too vague and being a size 10 (44) they are a little too tight.
They will break in with time, but if they were an exact size 10 then i would not have had to wear them in. It would help if this was explained when purchasing the product and i feel that it would be better if exact sizes were used in the promotion of this product."
