A review by BRAD KAVA MARCH on March 2010 for CT WATCHDOG about Ecco shoes, warning customer of almost New Expensive Shoes Disintegrate:
There I was at a formal party, wearing a black suit and a beautiful pair of Ecco shoes (lace-up Oxfords which list for $159-$187) when I felt like I had stepped in something. The soles of my shoes suddenly got sticky and when I looked down, big pieces were falling off. Right there at a formal gathering! I have only worn the shoes twice, and my mind started racing. Did I pass through some kind of acid bath on my way here? Did the carpet cleaner somehow get chemicals in my shoe closet? Were they in heat, cold? None of those was the answer. And as the night wore on, I grew more and more frustrated. My shoes were dissolving and leaving black pieces everywhere and I didn’t have a clue why. Let me say this: I’ve been a big fan of Eccos and have owned 20 pairs over the years. I’ve recommended them to my friends. They are expensive, but up until now, have always been worth the money. In fact, I sent three pairs of their hiking boots to Haiti, in the wake of the earthquake, thinking that was something people could really use. So what was this mystery shoe ailment? The minute I got home, I typed this sentence into Google: “My Ecco shoes started disintegrating,” and voila! and Thank the heavens and Al Gore for the Internet. There were hundreds of other complaints by people saying the same thing. Some said their shoes were older and hadn’t been worn; others said they were fairly new. I’m religious about checking reviews before I buy things, but never before noticed the complaints about Eccos. In fact, I recommended them to George Gombossy, our fearless leader here, and he bought two pairs, one of which disintegrated after six years. Mine was a couple of years old, but only worn a couple of times. I don’t get it. This reminds me of Toyota and a major company ignoring big problems. There are complaints on the boards dating back to 2007. I am writing the company and will keep you posted on what it says and does.
UPDATE: March 15: Ecco sent me an email saying the company will send me a shipping package so it can inspect the shoes. From the commenter below, this is a good sign that the company is taking care of the problem. On the plus side, that’s great. Also, all of my other Eccos have held up well. On the negative…can I risk having my shoes fall apart at another important event?
Brand Ambassador (Former Employee) says"Management can't make sales. They sit in the back and talk on their phones all day while making fun of customers. They will openly be nasty to you and tell you how they hate women. They will shut the doors and lock them 15 minutes before closing and not let anyone in because they don't want to do the work. False advertising, read the fine print in Mandarin or you won't get the sale."
SUPERVISOR (Current Employee) says"A typical day would be standing on the shop floor selling products, replacing shoes, dealing with customers, issuing refunds and exchanges and dealing with faulty shoes. You also need to order and replenish some stock. It is a very boring job and passion does fly away rather quickly, especially when working with noneffective managers. The pay could also be a bit better for living in London and the hours could be better in some stores."
Regional Product Manager - Asia Pacific (Current Employee) says"Family Owned Business Great Products Danish Company Luxury and Comfort brand Friendly Colleagues Passionate Poor HQ Location Low level experience"
Store Manager (Former Employee) says"Micromanaging/hypocritical. Head office hires friends to become managers, seasoned staff are used as slaves to train the new people who know nothing about the company."
Store Manager (Current Employee) says"They try to charm you during the interview process by telling you it's a "Family Business" but really it's to sucker you in. Head Office loves to micromanage and store employees get no freedom at all. The pay is low but you're told to "Be happy that you have a job". Head office employees from District Managers and above are lazy and no accountability for when they don't perform their duties. Overall, don't waste your time here there are better jobs waiting for you."
Assistant Manager (Former Employee) says"Very poor management. Management seems to be going downhill. Manager & DM very unfit for the position & fake. DM only hires his friends & family members. Which is very fraustating. DM & his friends/family all double faced hypocrites. Hours, promotion , decisions are given based off favouritism. The management is a joke. They will train you for a day & then you are good to go apparently. If you are not “IN”then they will shun you until you quit.Comfortable shoesDouble faced poor management"
Vodafone technical support (Current Employee) says"its a hard work but its really good to increase your ability about stress,,increase your commenecation skills, your handling way with all people ........"

Assistant Manager (Former Employee) says"I worked for this company for over 2 years as an Assistant Manager. During this time I had 4 managers and the company was in the process of recruiting a 5th manager when I left. The hardest part of this job was running the store while the company were finding/ recruiting and training a new manager and not getting any acknowledgement for do this or any responsibility pay. No movement or support from my Area Manager.noneWas not a good company to work for"
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) says"There seemed to be little groups which would constantly talk negatively about others, which caused an atmosphere. Most people have since left that didnt like the atmosphere caused by the Manager and Supervisor who previously worked together."
Assistant Store Manager (Current Employee) says"I wouldn't wish this brand on my worst of enemies. No training, No support, no cares given from management. Total joke in the retail industry."
Secrétaire Polyvalente (Intérim) says"Préparation de commande en produits pharmaceutiques animaliers Peu de travail de bureautique"
Sales Associate (Former Employee) says"Management doesn't care what you think or how you feel. No Advancements in the company.hoursmanagement"
Sale Assistant/Cashier (Former Employee) says"Lack of comunication between highier management. Less staff on the shifts. No bonuses as promised, by hiting targets becouse the targets were not achievable with low traffic."
Brand ambassador (Current Employee) says"This is a horrible place to work, people are 2 faced and the manger picks favourites. Manger sends you to the post office to return her items from plt or misguided! They also put a lot of pressure on you! Supervisor talk down to you all the time! This is such a horrible place to work and I’ll neber recommend it to anyoneFree dinnersManagement"
Part time third key (Former Employee) says"Had absolutely zero training with the manager. None. He would sit in the back on almost all his shifts. He would scan in product but never put it out or up. None of the staff felt that he communicated. He was constantly leaving notes all over. I got to open after 21 closings. Then when I asked if I would be trained on opening, another note. So I had no experience opening. Granted it was easy, not the point. He would schedule himself at 7:30-8 am when the store doesn’t open until 10. I assume it’s so he had less time on the floor. The DM said he needed to not come in any earlier than 9:30. He also would leave early almost every shift. I had several customers say he was not pleasant to deal with. And he would interrupt your conversation with your customer without being asked. I have worked in retail many years and have never worked with a manager like him. I couldn’t deal anymore so I said good riddance."
Store Manager (Current Employee) says"Not a good culture Do not treat staff very well No support from regional manager Do not recommend them as an employer Will get rid of staff so quick No chance of stepping up in promotion in the company I worked for them for many years but got to the stage where I had had enough Too stressful"
Store Director (Current Employee) says"If you want to work long hours with no recognition this job is for you. Great discount great benefits poor leader ship. You will be working over 12hrs a day if you are short staffed. You will have no help from your leader. You will have no to little training and will be criticized for your lack of knowledge."
Manager (Former Employee) says"Horrible district sales manager! Never helped other leaders find staff and would refuse to interview people as well. I don't recommend them because there is no room for advancement!"
Assistant Manager (Former Employee) says"They had a hard time getting past them Self. The rented a space from They’re number one seller who would use that against them. He would under sell them at anytime"
Anne H says"I have had a pair of Ecco walking boots which I have used for around 15 years. Unfortunately they have recently started leaking. They have an excellent grip on ice, and due to this, I was hoping to replace them with boots with a similar sole.
I looked online and went into the local Ecco shop. The shop did not have the boots I was interested in buying in stock. I explained I wanted to replace my walking boots with ones with a similar sole due to their excellent grip in ice. My understanding from the staff was that the sole of the Ecco Exostrike W is essentially the same sole and grip as the Ecco Exohike (Michelin sole). The Ecco Exostrike boots are also advertised online as having a “Rugged rubber outsole (which) adds excellent grip and durability in all weather conditions”. I purchased the Ecco Exostike boots by click and collect on 10/12/20.
The Ecco advertising that theEcco Exostrike boots have “excellent grip.... in all weather conditions” is misleading. I cannot walk with confidence on icy pavements and had to resort to walking in the roads in recent minor snowy/icy conditions in a town centre. They are in no way a replacement for the Ecco walking boots I have used for around 15 years – where I could walk on icy surfaces with confidence, knowing I would not slip and fall.
I contacted Ecco on 31/12/20 expressing my disappointment. I was offered a 10% discount on my next purchase. Following some consideration of this offer, I felt that as I have to buy a pair of boots I can use in icy conditions and no longer have confidence in the Ecco online descriptions, this response was unsatisfactory. I replied on 02/01/21, requesting a full refund. I was informed on 06/01/21 that this request was passed to the management team. I have not been contacted with a decision regarding my request for a refund.
Ecco Exostrike boots not as described (extremely poor grip in minor icy conditions).
Poor response time from management team following concerns raised with Ecco."
Mrs Virginia Scorah says"The order was returned (2 pairs of shoes) some weeks ago. I have had no acknowledgement and no refund."
Colin Phillips says"Hi. The shoes I ordered arrived in good time but unfortunately they didn't fit as they were too big so I returned them the very next day with the returns label via Parcel Force. That was two weeks ago and I haven't had an acknowledgement, and also my money has still not been refunded. Not very happy and won't be ordering anything else."
Customer says"I returned a pair of shoes a month ago and still no refund. I used the label provided and have proof of postage which they have been given a copy. They apparently can't locate the parcel and no longer respond to emails."
Elaine Burrows says"I bought these in the sale, thinking they were the exact same design as a pair I currently own which are extremely comfortable. Unfortunately they weren't, they were narrower and pinched my toes. As I have bunions I really need to have some width in the toe box. So I will be sending them back.
It would be really helpful if Ecco could indicate on their website which of their shoes are a wider fitting as it's not possible to judge from just the photographs.Otherwise it's a waste of Ecco's time as well as the buyer's to be continually ordering shoes and having to send them back."
Bob says"I ordered size 13 (47) shoes for myself. I received children’s shoes size 32."
Shannon Roberts says"Well wrapped & great condition, delay in postage but that was expected. Will be returning products as the boots were not quite as I had hoped. I do not like boots which are tight to the calf and I didn’t realise they would be like that from the pictures."
Brid Burke says"I have 2 pairs of ecco multivent and they are perfect
I am a bit disappointed with the last pair I bought
They are blue and have an elastic cross strap I thought it was velcro!
They are comfortable but a bit loose and I cant tighten them
Also the delivery person left them at the pier of my gate and they were out in the rain overnight
I was in the house all he had to do was ring the doorbell"
Thedawn Stalker says"Very nice boots but too narrow for my high arched feet: couldn't get them on.
Still awaiting a refund."
Rebecca says"The shoes are not that comfortable unfortunately. They feel a bit stiff and rub at the back. Usually there's no wearing in ecco shoes for me as they're usually so comfortable. Hopefully with a bit of wear they become more comfortable."
james brosnan says"The product is fine but not delivery. Was delivered to a shop 3 miles away which I had to collect not happy"
Tatiana says"My size is 7,sometime i buying 6.5.This boots looks like smaller. And not comfortable to put them on and off."
GH says"Firstly, the service is very good, easy returns, and the label is ready for you, should you need it. As you can guess, I had to return the boots, size 40 which I couldn’t even get my foot into. My other boots are size 40, so the design of these must be for an an extremely slim foot or ankle . I would recommend a larger size for most in this range. I am waiting on my refund."
Katie O Brien says"Hi, I received my order in 2 weeks.
The ECCO ST1LITE are very comfortable.
However the ECCO UKIUK are definately as comfortable as I expected. I ordered these to replace my old pair and honestly while they look exactly the same - they feel hard under foot ...and the wool lining seems lighter. I recall how immediately comfortable the last pair were, and continued to be for years. I only stopped wearing them a month ago as the upper came away. I hope the comfort underfoot improves with these ...but I suspect they are not made as they used to be? Can you advise? The previous pair were purchased in store in Ireland about 6 years ago."
Cheryl says"Loved the look of these trainers but after half an hour wearing indoors, decided they are just too tight. Have to return, but not clear how!!! Clearer info on this would be appreciated, please."
Janetnan says"I ordered the shoe cleaning kit and the Repel spray has arrived with no lid. I won’t return it as that has more impact on the environment but I’m a bit disappointed."
Christopher Guiver says"Unfortunately I had to return the shoes. They were size 44 my usual size but they were a size too small. I am hoping that my money has been refunded."
Tony Ryan says"Very nice boots but the sizing of the boot caused a bit of a problem. 9 1/2 to 10 is a little too vague and being a size 10 (44) they are a little too tight.
They will break in with time, but if they were an exact size 10 then i would not have had to wear them in. It would help if this was explained when purchasing the product and i feel that it would be better if exact sizes were used in the promotion of this product."
Mujagic says"Pros: Light but still keeping feet warm, unique design
Cons: zip is hard to rich and shoes are slippery on wet or frosty surface."
Katherine ireland says"Boots delivered very quickly. They were lovely alas had to return them as furry indetail made fitting very tight. Had few moments where I thought they'll stretch in time but not falling into that trap again. Was surprised as other ecco shoes size 39 I have were slightly too big."
